3 Skincare Ingredients to Avoid During Pregnancy

We’re celebrating moms throughout the month of May and that includes soon-to-be moms who are pregnant! It’s important to #TakeAMoment every day during pregnancy, as it’s essential to be kind to yourself—practicing self-care is crucial, as your body is going through a lot. Pregnancy can also impact your skin, so skincare during pregnancy is incredibly important.

Pregnancy can improve complexion and skin health for some, but for others, pregnancy can bring about skin issues like dry skin, darkened skin, and acne. Every person is different! For this reason, be mindful of what your skin needs and what kind of skincare products you should use during pregnancy.

Ultimately, there are ingredients out there that can be harmful to your body and baby. In this blog post, we’re sharing some skincare ingredients to avoid during pregnancy.

Like always, please make sure to consult first with your doctor on any potential changes you may make to your skincare routine during pregnancy.

3 Skincare Ingredients to Avoid During Pregnancy

Here are a few ingredients that should be avoided during pregnancy to minimize any potential health risks:

1. Retinol

Coming in at number one is retinol. Retinol is a form of Vitamin A that is often included in skincare products, particularly to slow down the signs of aging, keep pores clear, fight acne, and brighten your complexion. However, using products with retinol while pregnant is not recommended, especially prescription-strength retinol products like Accutane, which is often used to treat acne, or tretinoin creams

Why is retinol not recommended? They can potentially cause serious health problems if used during pregnancy. Topical, over-the-counter products that contain small amounts of retinol are likely low-risk, but we recommend avoiding them as well.

Prescription medications, including retinol and other retinoids, present a 20-35% risk of serious birth defects if consumed or utilized while pregnant. Additionally, upward of 60% of children end up with neurocognitive problems if they are exposed to prescription retinol before birth, like Accutane. For this reason, doctors recommend Accutane users to stop using the medication a few months before trying to conceive.

    2. High Doses of Salicylic Acid

Salicylic acid is an anti-inflammatory ingredient often used to treat acne and serves as an exfoliant. While small amounts of this ingredient are safe to use during pregnancy, such as a simple topical treatment, high doses should be completely avoided. High doses of salicylic acid appear in products like salicylic acid peels to treat acne and in some oral medication.

Did you know a common pain reliever comprised of salicylic acid is aspirin? Please know you should absolutely avoid this during pregnancy—we recommend finding a different pain reliever with your doctor if you use aspirin often.

      3. Certain Chemicals in Sunscreen

While there are many safe and effective sunscreen options to choose from while pregnant, there are multiple chemical ingredients often found in sunscreen that should be avoided during pregnancy. The following chemicals are absorbed into the skin and bloodstream and can potentially be dangerous for you or your baby:

        • Avobenzone: may lead to hormone disruption

        • Homosalate: can disrupt body’s hormone regulation

        • Octocrylene: can cause cell damage

        • Oxybenzone: may damage DNA & lead to production of free radicals

You should find paraben-free, mineral-based, and unscented sunscreen, as these are the most safe and gentle options for your skin and for the health of your baby. Plus, be sure to always apply sunscreen during pregnancy if you’re heading outside on a sunny day—just stay clear of those harmful UV rays!
